8/11/2004 I need to update the news...a lot has happened. Hold on while I update the site..thanks for checking back...

7/26/2004 The Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Boston, July 26-29. It's important to get Bush out of office...but critical to let the Democrats know that we're pissed off!

The Democrats follow the Republican lead- they support US aggression abroad, while at home upholding a system that benefits only the very wealthy at our expense. The Dems were bought out by the corporate and elite interests long ago.

We take to the streets this week to say, PEOPLE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN PROFITS! No to blood for oil! No to state repression! Yes to freedom and a future with a true democracy!

6/24/2004 The Profits are going on a short tour- to the CLIT fest!
Check out our shows page for the details on this trip...I can't wait! I'll give ya the scoop when we get back!

6/12/2004 ABC NoRio in NYC.
Imagine our surprise when we found out that we were playing last after The Goons from DC, Artimus Pyle from CA, and the Sunday Morning Einsteins from Sweden! Yes, we are now officially rock stars. Ha ha ha. No, seriously, thanks to everyone who came to the show and hung out for our set. All of the bands were great. Good times at ABC! Also, cheers to the Witch Hunt crew for their support and also Hope who always puts up with us. NYC rocks!

I was very glad to put the Profits slide show in action during our set, something we haven't done in a long time. ABC has a great screen that they use for movie night- a perfect set up! So that was fun. It was interesting that the slides and themes that I choose in 2001 were still relevant for today, and I guess probably for a long time to come. Fuck the greedy bastards at the top!

There was also a fight during our set, which was not so fun. But, on the up side, it was cool to see the ABC collective effectively deal with the situation, so the show continued without a problem. After the show we had Mexican food and fell asleep. End of a long long day...see ya next time!

6/02/2004 Providence DIY rocked my world.
Providence DIY is amazing! I feel like I've been seriouly missing out. Providence is only about an hour drive south of Boston, but for several years I didn't know much about their local DIY punk scene. On June 2, we were lucky enough to play with Behind Enemy Lines from Pittsburgh at S220 in Providence. It was awesome! Contempt for Humanity and All Those Opposed, both from Providence, had lots of energy, charged poltical lyrics and good music. And the circle pit was in effect! Behind Enemy Lines blew everyone away with their loud, blistering melodic thrash. I never got to see Aus-Rotten, so it was great to see Dan singing with his new band, and to hear his take on issues on stage. They rocked my world!!

The club/space/cafe/bar was a great space that was all ages, and the people running it were really organized and helpful. Thanks to everyone at S220, and everyone who danced and supported us. We really appreciated the warm welcome in Providence, and hope to be back soon!

5/08/2004 Women up front!
Imagine this lineup: The Profits, All or Nothing HC, the Midnight Creeps and the Enemy Myself. Amazing, yes! And it happened at All Asia Cafe in Cambridge. What a day, with all women-fronted bands. All or Nothing HC from California simply rock. Rene, famous MRR columnist and lead singer for All or Nothing, had such a strong and fun energy on stage. Her lyrics are pissed off but positive and get to the heart of things, and the band plays classic hardcore style with fast beats and breakdowns. Awesome! The Midnight Creeps had a great set too, the Boston punks were dancing and singing along, and shirts were flying off- a hot, sweaty, rockin' time! Just as we were getting started, during "Profit Over People," the pit erupted into punk craziness! Then Mark (one of the owners) said, "that's it!" We played only about five songs total before we were shut off, but it was a great time! Thanks to the Boston punks!

5/02/2004 Thanks to Jeff and everyone who came out to the DS house!
This Sunday was an awesome, if slightly rainy, day for a punk rock picnic, BBQ and show at the Disaster House. What fun! SEND MORE COPS went full out and played a strong set. Then JOHN WAYNEÕS SEVERED HEAD attacked with a CT thrash attack, with hardcore breakdowns to mosh around the basement to. BALLAST from Canada played, and it was great to see them! IÕve been listening to their tape of powerful noisy pissed off punk on trips, and its lived in the van for months. Just as was things were getting going, during their third song, the party stopped.

Cops shut the show down. Damn. BALLAST had to stop their set and THE PROFITS didnÕt get to play afterwards. Bummer! Although we had to pack up and the show ended, it was still a great time hanging out anyway, and the few songs BALLAST played were great. Thanks a bunch to Jeff Disaster for setting up the show and all the punks who came out. Good times!

4/15/2004 Richard Marr is the Master of Mastering. The Profits Discography in the Works.
We spent two days at Richard's house in Allston in his converted dining room called Galaxy Park Studios. Richard made magic with his computer, and all of his heaps of audio gear and speakers, and his old old boom-box. That's how punk sounds best! Blasting through the crappy stereo! We took all of our recordings (that's three 7" records, and a full length CD) and put them together. Amazing! Four years as a band all together on one CD. It's a little surreal that we're going to have a "discography"! It's really exciting. Thanks to Richard for being great. The 39 songs (in about 48 minutes) will be released by Active Distribution in London sometime this summer. Thanks to Jon and Marta!

4/11/2004 The Profits live video footage featured on CCTV's cool new Belive, "Down on the Street."
Thanks to the amazing crew of "Down on the Street"! They video taped The Profits playing "Propaganda Machine" at the House of Suffering show on April 9, and the cool black and white footage was shown on their half hour live cable access show. Awesome! "Down on the Street" is on the second and fourth Sunday of every month, and will talk about biking and skating, urban transportation issues, music and other topics. It's on channel 9 in Cambridge, MA, and also web streamed at www.cctvcambridge.org. Check it out!!

3/26/2004-The Profits played the first day of the NYC Punk Rock Olympics at CBGBs!
Playing
CBGBs is always a thrill, and this show was no exception. I know, I know, CBGBs has expensive beer, and charges way too much money at the door. This sucks! But in my opinion the punk history of the place, the great sound and the chance to see and play with great bands more than makes up for it. (Plus you can sneak in beer..) Vitamin X headlined, and were amazing to see. They have great energy and their outlook is political but fun and positive. They are straight-edge but sing a song against the drug war! They rocked and the circle pit was crazy.

We were happy with our set as people supported our ideas and outlook, and the crowd danced and had energy. It was fun to hear our music so clearly and loud, as CBGBs has the best sound system we've ever played on. It's huge and run by punks! Playing such a big and notorious place can really be a challenge for a band (it can be damn intimidating!), but we rocked out. At least I felt really satisfied that we played our best, said what was on our minds, and all had fun on stage and played together as a band. What more is there?? Fun Fun...

Thanks to our friends who came out (esp. Megan, Hope and Lucho!), the NYC punks, everyone who danced, Czolgosz as always! and Gabby for setting this show up. Cheers!

3/20/2004-The Profits new 7" record "U.S. Atrocity" was released March 20.
A year ago, the first bombs of "Operation Iraqi Freedom" dropped on Baghdad. Since then, thousands of Iraqi women, men and children, and hundreds of American soldiers have lost their lives as a result of the war.

In Iraq, people are trying to rebuild their lives and country under a yoke of US occupation. In the US, billions are spent on guns as the poor go hungry, the economy crumbles, and war is used as a hammer to suppress dissent. All for the interests of the oil companies, war profiteers and power-hungry politicians. Fuck them all!!

This record is dedicated to the dead, and also the living who fight for a better world for all of us.

"U.S.Atrocity" will also be released by Active Distribution in Europe as part of The Profits discography CD.
Thanks so much to Active for taking this project on. You can see their site at www.activedistribution.org. They are quite an active lot in London, with an enormous distro. catalogue of good bands, a record label, publishing radical literature, and working with the 56@ radical infoshop!

A month before the war started, over 30 million people internationally protested against a US attack. Seeing the massive protests in London, Paris, Berlin, Rome and around the world was inspiring, and I felt in solidarity with so many people as we took to the streets in Boston. It will be great to share our music with people across the pond, and this October we are going on European tour. Punk and solidarity have no borders!

3/15/2004- The Profits will be included on the Boston Infest Comp.
If you live in Boston, you/ve probably heard about the massive Infest coming up at the end of May. Tons of local punk and hardcore bands will play over three days- a festival the likes of which Boston hasn't seen in a decade! Thanks to Pat from FNS 'zine for setting it up. (Check out our show listings for more info.)

As part of the festival, FNS and Welfare Records are releasing a 12" record comp. of bands playing over the weekend. The Profit$ will be on the record- and our new song rocks! It was something that we recorded but has not yet been released. Even with sound effects, the song- No Deposit, No Return - is less than 45 seconds long! Looking forward to the comp and hope you like the song! By the way, there will be only 500 copies of the record made, mostly for the punks who go to the show- so see ya there!

2/27/2004- New Hampshire punks rock!
Once again, a grand time was had in the Granite State. We played on a Friday night with SWAT from Boston, Scary Mary from Maine and a surprise appearance by one of NH's best punk bands today, The Struggle. Good times! The venue was Curly's Coffee House in Amherst, just outside of Nashua. Bill, who runs the place, is dedicated to putting on shows, keeping a low door price and helping local musicians. Crazy! Good luck to him and the new venue!

2/16/2004- Nine Days and Four Shows Crazy punk rock times!
I can't believe I'm still awake. It's Sunday, and we rolled into Boston at 8am this morning- after a 7 hour straight drive from Baltimore.
We played with the Knox and The Squints at the new Brewhenge space last night- thanks to all the Baltimore punx who made it so much fun! Thanks esp. to Tom for setting up the show and organizing the event. The vegan pot luck was delicious! Also, so much free beer we were washed away in Baltimore hospitality. Loud, drinking, dancing, punk rock times!
Also, if you are ever in Baltimore, check out the Brewhenge as it has some amazing graffiti work on the walls. The converted industrial space is also a grand example of how a group of people can create their own DIY and cool as hell space for shows and living, not depending on someone else to do it for them!

Here are the other 3 shows we just played-

2/6/04 Friday, February 6th
The Struggle, Jonee Earthquake Band, The Profits, The Knox
@ Club Exit 23, Haverhill, MA
This show was over the top energy! The punks who come out to the DIY all-ages hall Exit 23 know how to dance and have a good time, and you should have seen the two human chains of "walls of doom" rushing towards eachother during the Struggle's set. Ka pow! Crazy! One of my favorite shows we've played in awhile. All of the bands were great and the Knox and the Struggle only get better every time I see them. I hope we can make it back and play with this crew again soon!

2/7/04 Saturday, February 7th
The Profits, Meat Depressed, The Call Up @ the Littleton VFW, Littleton, NH
This was an intense trip- we didn't realize how far Littleton, New Hampshire is, as we didn't take a good look at a map before we left Boston. Yikes! It was as far north as Augusta, Maine. We ended up driving through the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and through the one-lane mountain pass of a National Park- during a snow storm at night!! It was a very scary drive, about 4 hours of slow going, and we are very thankful that we made it there and back without falling down a mountain!! Fuck!
The show was hopping tho', and we played our set to a group of punks who had never seen us before. Lots of kids enjoyed our free issues of Profane Existence, Slug and Lettuce and SlingShot, which was good to see. Also, cheers to "Troll" for getting the pit going! We'll be back...but not until spring!!!

2/8/04 Sunday, February 8th
The Profits, The Escaped (Portland, OR), Midnight Creeps (RI), For the Worse,Side Effects @ All Asia, Cambridge, MA

This show sold out even before the Side Effects finished their set. Thanks to all of the Boston punks and skins for coming out! All of the bands tore it up, and it was great to play with the Midnight Creeps and the Escaped again. There was a fight right before our set, and the show was shut down for a few minutes while things were sorted out...but then we played!! Too bad most people left, chased out by the owners...but thanks to all of the kick ass punks who stuck around, and danced to our set!! We even played "4 Minute Warning" by Chaos UK- for the last time ever! Good times with all the punks at All Asia! See you soon...

I'm going to sleep now- it has been a long ass day, and a long ass week, I'll add more later when I update the site- but just wanted to say THANKS to all the bands we played with, and everyone who came out and supported us over the past two crazy weekends. You rock!

1/11/2004- Thanks to everyone who came out the Witch Hunt and Profits show at All Asia yesterday!
It was colder than death outside, a miniscule 2 degrees. Up the Boston punks who came out anyway despite the chill, danced, had fun and supported all of the bands! A big thanks also to Thhe Struggle, Czolgosz and Public Domain for playing! All Asia continues to be a good place for all ages DIY shows, with a bar for the drinking older punks. Witch Hunt rocked out as usual, with mad blasts of politically aware hardcore crust punk. It was great to see Witch Hunt again, and thanks to them for coming out all the way from New Jersey for the show.

1/1/2004 Happy 10th Anniversary of the Zapatista Uprising in Chiapas, Mexico! Demand Justice, Liberty, Equality NOW! Cheers to the indigenous people of Mexico who refused to be enslaved another day!In honor of the Zapatista's bravery, inspiration and tireless struggle for true freedom and autonomy, The Profits wrote "Ya Basta" in 2000. It appeared on our second 7" "Dying for Dollars."

12/31/2003 I finially updated the web site! Changing servers was a bigger mess than I anticipated. But never fear, dear reader, the web site is back! It was down for about three weeks as I boycotted my computer and things still needed to be loaded up to the new location. If you find any bugs or missing links, please let me know. One big benefit of the new server is the ability to have an interactive bulletin board and a way for me to quickly update the site. Looking forward to new gadgets to figure out for 2004. I learn these things as I go, so it may take a little while before I get to creating the new features. DIY web design go!

12/01/2003 The Profits are taking a month off. December is a busy month for everyone, with family and holidays to endure and all of that mess. We decided to take a month off from playing shows, and recharge our batteries. We are also working on NEW songs, and time off from shows has allowed us to spend more time at practice working on the brand new. We'll be back with a bang in January- see ya then!

11/30/2003 Both Naked Aggresion shows were amazing! Thanks to everyone who came out. I think the ABC NoRio show was the best time we've had there so far. Tons of people were dancing for all of the bands- and the Profits pit was wild! Thanks to the ABC No Rio crew- you fuckin' RULE! So much fun in NYC at an inspiring DIY community space. The show in Boston was also over the top- All Asia has never been so packed before! Both Disaster Strikes and Toxic Narcotic played with fierce energy, and TN was at their fastest and most brutal, just returning from a long US tour. Naked Aggression was absolutely amazing, and I came close to tears at the ABC No Rio show- really! I am such a sap, but they were really that uplifting and full of their old energy and music that so many people probably felt the same way I did. Naked Aggression was also great at All Asia, and the Boston punks danced their hearts out. Thanks again to everyone who brought the positive energy and made both shows an example of how fun and vibrant punk can really be.

11/29/2003 I am so excited to play with Naked Aggression! They are back together for one more tour, and releasing their last CD which was never put out. Naked Aggression played fierce political punk in the 90s. They broke up when their guitarist suffered a tragic, sudden and fatal asthma attack. The band was a huge influence on me personally, and on many other punks I'm sure. Kirsten, the lead singer, sings lyrics that are full of feeling and content. The music is equally inspiring and powerful. I was lucky to play with Naked Aggression at the Rat with my first band years ago, and am excited to play with them again. The All Asia show in Boston will most likely sell out, so come early!Saturday, November 29 Naked Agression, Toxic Narcotic, The Profits, The Swindle @ABC No Rio NYC, NY 3 PM all ages.Sunday, November 30 Naked Agression, Toxic Narcotic, The Profits, Disaster Strikes, The Swindle @ All Asia Cafe, 332 Mass. Ave., Central Square Cambridge, MA 3 PM all ages.

11/20/2003 Thanks Shongo!
On tour this summer, I left my boots in San Diego. That's what I get for being a hippy and wearing flip-flops in the van! After four months, Shongo rescued my boots from the back of his closet, put them in the mail, and now my boots and I have been reunited! Thanks so much Shongo! And the Shitgiveits t-shirt is an added bonus! You rock!

11/13/2003 Bye Bye SWAT on tour
Much fun was had at the All Asia show- thanks to everyone who made it a good time! It was the first day of the SWAT tour- good luck guys!

11/08/2003 Drop Dead and Disaster Strikes
This was a great show, as I loved seeing Disaster Strikes back together. They are one of Boston's best political punk bands, and are smart, fun and energetic all at the same time. After a line-up change, and months of writing new songs, Disaster Strikes rocked! John Wayne's Severed Head from New York was also good, and hopefully we will play with them again soon. Thanks especially to BooBoo and Amy for supporting The Profits, and up the Knox crew! Of course, Drop Dead was amazing, no doubt about it.

Too bad this was both the first and last show at the Boy's and Girl's Club in Allston. Someone wrote on the bathroom wall with a sharpie, and beer cans were found. Stupid shit. Oh well. Keep rocking the basements, VFW and All Asia!

11/05/2003 Song of Baghdad
The US Senate approved another payment, this time $87 billion dollars ($87,000,000,000.00), from the US Treasury to pay for the War in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This vast amount of cash will go mostly into the pockets of corporations who manufacturer guns, airplanes, missiles, bullets and tanks. A very small slice of the billions will also go towards the "rebuilding" of Iraq, whatever the US thinks that means. Behind the money, what's the cost of misery, what's the cost of war? click for more Bush Lies and People Die, Continue to Resist. In Solidarity, Erika Ransom.

10/28/2003 Dreaming of European Tour
As the winter approaches, I start to think of next summer and going on our next tour. I really want to tour Europe, and yesterday I had a dream the Profits were in France. I had lost my passport, and was wondering how the hell I got there. wierd. But in real life, the dream awakens. I try to make it real! We are excited about playing music to punks in a different country and want to meet people around the world.

If you can help us with shows in Europe, please give me an email at ransom@theprofits.org. We'd love to go in September 2004. Thanks, and cheers to punks around the world!

10/18/2003 All Ages Venues in the Boston Area Rock On!
Exit 23 in Haverhill kicks ass. This was our first time playing at this place, about 45 minutes north of Boston. It is a small venue, just the right size for a punk show, with a low stage and a good and loud homemade PA. This all-ages DIY venue is owned by a guy who built the place out of a gutted 50s pre-fab diner and what looks like part of a house. There aren't any rules except no drinking, don't smash the windows, and don't hang out in front. Rock on. Jonee Earthquake were awesome as usual, and so were the Knox! During both sets, the punks went nuts and the pit was a big smash-em-up crazy whirlwind affair with friends crashing into friends at top speed and awesome massive sing-alongs. Hell ya!! Thanks to everyone especially who danced during our set, and everyone there who made the show so off the hook fun. Punk is alive and well in New England!

10/11/2003 Mid Atlantic Anarchist Book Fair- Baltimore, MD
Baltimore punks are a little crazy. No doubt about it. We stayed up 'til about 8am hanging out with a house full of punks after the festival. There wasn't a spot left to sleep in (literally) at the Slaughter House, so (being a little rediculous) we drove home to Boston, arriving home about 3pm in the afternoon. A highlight was hanging out with Rich (who was awake, sober and driving) and watching the sun come up before falling asleep in my chair.

The show itself was a little odd, too, as it was in a massive room with glass walls and marble floors in John Hopkins University. It felt sterile, too loud and out of place. Besides that, the punks stayed late and supported all the bands even after a full day of workshops and tabling, which was really cool of everyone there. We played after 1 am, but the punks rallied and danced and we fed off of eachother's energy. I had a lot of fun playing, and we even busted out the slide show. Witch Hunt were amazing, and I was so glad we were able to play with them again. Their words touched and inspired me, and their music was powerful and moving. Thanks to the Baltimore punks, especially those who organized the show and made it possible.

10/04/2003 Festival in Lawrence
This shows wasn't billed as a festival, but it sure felt like one. At least ten bands played at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Lawrence, MA. It was an interesting venue to say the least- it was a sparse, aging, rambling place built in like the 60s with a bar on the main level. Everything was made of wood and painted brown. Middle aged men drank beer and watched the Red Sox. The punk show was in the basement, all ages. There was a sweet 16 birthday party in the main hall upstairs with balloons and dinner.

The show lasted all day, but the bands went by quickly, as everyone only had fifteen to twenty minutes to set up and play. Much fun, as the energy remained from band to band, and all the bands played their best songs.

During our set, the lights went out! A fuse was blown. While the problem was being figured out, Rich kept playing the drums, and the punks kept dancing! We started to play 'profit over people' without power, and then during the second verse the lights and the power came back on. We didn't miss a beat and finished the song with guitars blazing. A damn good time.

Cheers to all of the New Hampshire and MAss Punks and all of the bands- Jonee Earthquake Band, 20 to 1, Blank Society, The Chaotix, The Struggle, The Jimmies (Maine), Kolossal Chaos, Blank Tradion and the ones I'm leaving out. Good times!

9/02/2003 West Coast punks invade Boston!
The Escaped (Portland, OR), The Profits, Monster Squad (CA), Side Effects (x-Statistics) @ All Asia Cafe. Monster Squad and The Escaped, plus their friends, invaded Boston this weekend! It was really fun to see The Escaped play in Boston, as we have played with them twice while on tour on the west coast in the last two years. I've also heard great things about Monster Squad, and I was not disappointed. Both bands rock- so check out their records if you like good old school punk (and who doesn't?)

8/17/2003 Thanks to everyone who had fun with us at The Yard in Long Island!
Outside Show @ The Yard, Holtsville, Long Island, NY
1 PM , All Ages Eyes of Hate, The Profits, The Spitzz, Zombie Vandals, Endangered Species, Shell Shock.
This show was sooo much fun! Outside on a nice day, drinking beer, watching good punk rock bands play on a homemade stage. No rules and no real fights. Lots of girls up front, circle pits in the sand, friends singing along and picking eachother up- good punk rock times!

8/10/2003 All Asia show in Cambridge
What a night! All Asia is a little restaurant in Cambridge, with a tiny stage in one corner. Punks from all over converged on the place to see the Knox, Czolgosz, Aphasia (from Pittsburgh) and the Profits. It was good to see kids from New Hampshire and Connecticut hanging out in Boston, as well as Boston friends, and for me, this show was a blast as I love all these bands. Check out Aphasia, as they are good melodic punk with powerful female vocals. Thanks to everyone who filled the place with energy when we played! We only had about ten minutes to play, as the bar wanted to end the show, so we just blasted through as many songs as we could. It was great fun, as the little restaurant seemed to bust at the seams! People over profit- go!

American Legion Hall, July 26, 2003, Nashua NH

Thanks to everyone who came out to the recent Profits shows!

7/26/2003 Punk Rock BBQ in Nashua, NH
This was a fun show, as there were many awesome bands- the mighty Jonee Earthquake, The Knox, The Contrary and Twenty to One, just to name a few- and lots of punks came out for the show and to have a good time. Check out photos of all the bands on Jonee Earthquake's site!
It was hard to believe that this was only The Profits second time playing in New Hampshire, and we plan on coming back soon. Thanks to the kids in the circle pit!

7/25/03 The Profits will be featured on the next Rodent Popsicle Boston Punk Comp. coming out this fall.
Rodent Popsicle has been putting out quality DIY comps. for the past few years, and we're excited to be included in this most recent collection. Rodent fans most likely have the classic "Another Boston Punk Comp." that included (future members of the Profits) August Spies and the Baby Shakers. The Profits were included on "Boston Punk 2000" with an early recording of "Violent Fringe." For this upcoming comp., we will be using one of our new songs, recorded for the Profits' US Atrocity 7" that will also be coming out at the end of the summer. Looking forward to another CD that I can play over and over, listening to my favorite bands until I'm sick of it.

7/05/03 ABC No Rio Rocks!
Cheers to everyone who came out to ABC the day after July 4th! It was hot as hell, and the whole of New York seemed hung over from the previous night, ourselves included. But despite the heat and alcohol abuse, a fun group of people came out to ABC to hang out in the shade of the backyard garden, support the scene and to catch a few good touring bands. A big thanks to Lixzan and Rob for setting up the show and to Mia and the whole crew for dancing during our set! It was the first time the Profits have played NYC in awhile, and it was really cool that people came out to say "hello" and have fun and sweat in the pit. As always, thanks to Hope and Martin for being so awesome and letting us take over their apartment and livers for the weekend.

Another positive thing about the show- Adam and I interviewed Lixzann about the ABC NoRio HardCore Collective for our cable access show Roach Motel. For those punks in Boston, you can watch the ABC No Rio episode on Wednesdays at midnight on channel 23, Boston's cable access channel. In Cambridge, you can watch on Tuesday nights at 9pm on channel 9, CCTV. Simply put, the ABC NoRio collective continues to rock. An inspiring place made possible by a hard working group of people.

7/01/03 Damn, who updates your website? Are the Profits back in town, or did they get lost in Texas somewhere trying to find a decent bagel?
Tour was amazing, beautiful, tiring, energizing and dirty all at once. I've been away from cyberspace and it took a little bit of time to bring myself back to the computer after enjoying a whole month of looking out the van window, watching the countryside roll by under a blue sky. Sorry for the lazy-ass delay! Things will be updated over the next few weeks, with new photos, lyrics, MP3s, video and Ransom Notes. Thanks for checking in- this site isn't dead, just taking a summer nap in the sun!

6/25/2003 Thanks to everyone who supported us during our summer tour around the United States!
We left at the end of May and traveled playing shows throughout the long haul from Boston to Seattle (rocking' in Columbus, Chicago and Minneapolis), down the Pacific coast to San Diego (much fun on the west coast), and back home going east through Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Missouri and Maryland. We played twenty-one shows in three and a half weeks. Not bad for a bunch of punks.

show dates and cities

Much love to everyone who set up shows, put up fliers, came to check us out, let us sleep on their floors, borrow their equipment when ours began to break, checked out our web site to see what the hell we're all about, offered us beer/food/good times, stopped the mic stand from crashing into my face, gave us directions, played a show with us, were so cool to dontate their band money to help us out on tour, made us welcome so far from home, and kept things going in the pit!
We all had an amazing time, and thanks to everyone who made it possible!

5/26/03 Holy crap, we're going on tour!
The website is finally back up-to-date, with all of our final tour dates. I can't believe we are hitting the road in a couple of days. Where is my tooth brush? Why can't we find anywhere to play in LA? Will I survive the heat of Texas? Do I need bug spray? How many pairs of socks do I need for a three and half week tour? Ack! All I know for certain is that we're all getting in the van, and driving to the other side of the freakin' continent, and back. Wish us luck, and try to come and see us if you can. Stories when we get back...

5/14/03 Thanks to all the punx at the Davis Square VFW show!
The PA that had been so graciously donated by Ross of Earth Died Screaming made the show possible- and then it died! During our first song, the brave PA gave out. No vocals, and just our guitars and drums raged on. It was amazing that so many of our friends and Boston punks were singing along and dancing regardless- it made our set fun as hell- vocals or not- and created a moment of punk rock energy that would be hard to duplicate. Hell ya!

Also a big thanks to Rachel Lefkowitz for these awesome photos. We appreciate it! I need to add, that after our set, Clit 45 went on and had a great set despite a rejuvenated, but weak, PA. By A Global Threat's set, we had set up the mic. to go through Adam's combo Peavey amp! Great times had by all. Up the punx.

5/02 Thanks to everyone who went to the kick ass show at the I.C.C. Church in Allston. Except for an occassional odd drunken vibe, this was the best show in Boston I've been to in quite some time. During our set, I had so much fun, as so many people were running around and adding to the energy, I was blown away! Boston rocks! Molotov Cocktail from NYC were great to see, as well as our friends Toxic Narcotic, Czolgosz and The Knox. It was a little bizarre playing a show with a large wooden cross over our heads, but it was even stranger to see all the drunk and smoking kids in the church! It was a little crazy and lots of fun. And, the "youth pastor" didn't seem to mind! Thanks again to everyone who sang along and made the show positive- also a big thanks to the guy who let me borrow his guitar after Adam's guitar took a direct hit by either someone or something and the input was smashed. (Funny thing is, I was borrowing Adam's cool red guitar at the time, because my guitar was smashed during our last show at the Elk's Lodge). Don't worry, both guitars are in stable shape, and are being repaired. Also, special shout out to Elie and the Knox crew for rocking out and being so cool! Love, Erika

4/28/03 A little bit of Profits history added to the about section of the web site.
Check it out!

4/17/03 The Profits are recording a new 7" this weekend!
We have 5 new songs that will be on a 7" out this fall. The songs will also be on a split CD with Molotov Cocktail, a kick ass punk band from NYC. These songs are a little different from our older stuff, as we try new ways of expressing our rage and cynicism at the current state of the world. Most of the songs were written as the bombs were falling on Badgad- what else would you expect? There is also a more light hearted, fast song about reclaiming your life, and Adam and I sing it together, something we haven't tried since our first album.

On a personal note, creating these songs with the band has reminded me how much punk helps me cope with the atrocities that are happening in our name as US citizens, and the complete and utter sadness that I feel for the people of Iraq. I have done what I can to resist this latest war- going to protests, writing for zines, covering events for cable access shows, going to workshops and speaking out at shows- but music has been an important emotional release. Despite the protests of millions of people in the US and around the world, the US attacked Iraq anyway. Writing these songs has also reminded me that if we don't change our system, and create real democracy at home, then we are doomed to repeat history. I don't want the US attack on Iraq to become a footnote for 2003, as Nicaragua became to the 80s. I hope to not look at this record ten years from now, and say nothing's changed.
In solidarity and power chords, Erika Rasom

3/17 Erika's May column in MRR is posted in the Ransom Notes section of the site.
It's all about spring in Boston, and this fucked up war.
It's called Blood and Crocuses.

3/20 Fuck this War! Cheers to everyone in Boston and across the world who told Bush to stop this war! The day after the US began the illegal, immoral and unsanctioned attack on Iraq, Boston and Cambridge took to the streets. Over a thousand people marched from the MIT and Harvard campuses, down Mass. Ave., over the bridge, and to Government Center. From there, people marched to Copley Square. See www.boston.indymedia.org for all the details. The rallies weren't as large as the crowds in NYC or San. Fran., but Boston is not sitting quiet while the U.S. bombs another nation! Cheers to all the punks I saw at the protest.

3/17 The Profits Love New York
A big shout out to the Long Island punks! We played the New Local 7 on Long Island last Saturday, which was an old fashioned, all-day-long, drink-in-the-parking-lot, too many bands, fucking fun, moshing, spike, leopard print and drama filled DIY punk rock show in a warehouse in Deer Park.
I had a blast. Molotov Cocktail and Eyes of Hate rocked, and The Profits' drummer, Rich, filled in and played drums with Toxic Narcotic who sounded awesome.

Cheers to the girls who stood up front during the Profits' set, the punks who sang along, and everyone who danced and jumped around while respecting others. (Earlier, there were a couple of assholes in the pit who were hurting folks and starting shit, no good.) Thanks to Jeremy for organizing the whole thing, and a big thanks to everyone who came out. We had a great time.

Zola, we already miss you!
Thanks Hope and Martin, and all the empty bottles we left behind in Brooklyn...

3/12/2003 The Profits have sold out of our first release, "Profit Over People" that came out in 2000. Holy shit! It's hard to believe that a 1,000 of our CDs are now sittin' in punks' music collections around the country. A little weird, but wonderful. This week, Adam went to pick up another batch of CDs, so don't worry, "Profit Over People" will still in circulation and we'll sell it at shows and in local record stores. (I know you sit up at night...) I am always saying "thanks" on this web site, and I'll say it again. Thanks to everyone who bought a CD, supported us, went to the shows and danced, set up shows and listened to our songs over the last three years. Up the punx. The Profits continue to scream...

2/28 Check out a few photos of the Profits at the Juice Bar on 2.28. Thanks Justin! This show was a ton of fun. Thanks to A.D.D., Confront and Dirty Water, and all crazy circle pit Cape Cod punks!

2/25 A big thanks to everyone who came out to our shows last weekend! On Friday, we played at The Sugar Shack, a small coffee shop in Lowell. The show was completely off the hook, with punks literally bouncing and smashing off the walls. Thanks to the Knox for setting the show up and rocking out, and to all the Lowell punks!
Jacques, a drag queen bar in Boston's South End, was a black leather jacket drinking affair on Saturday. It was good to support the club, which has been under attack by the recently gentrified neighborhood, and to have a few beers with long time friends. Thanks to the Overprivileged for coming all the way from DC to play.
On Sunday, we played the Met Cafe, our first time playing in Providence- and for sure not our last. Thanks to everyone who stayed to see us play!

2/15 The Profits salute everyone around the world who protested against the war on Feb. 15! New York organizers reported that up to 500,000 people rallied in Manhattan to say NO to Bush's plans for war against Iraq. Click on the image to the right for more information from the NYC IndyMedia Center about the protest, the 311 people arrested, and police brutality during the event.
Around the world, cities saw the largest antiwar protests on record. In London the organizers put the figure at 2 million. In Germany, over 500,000 people protested and 300,000 gathered in 60 towns and cities across France. Check out http://www.stopwar.org.uk/ for more details.

Fight War, Not Wars! Hell ya!

2/8/2003- Attention NYC Punks- Fuck! We had been looking forward to ABC NoRio all month, but had to cancel at the last minute. During the Caustic Christ show on Friday (Feb. 7), Adam threw out little plastic army men for fun during "4 More Years." Someone threw a couple back, and one hit Adam right in his eye, scratching his cornea. He's OK, but we spent most of Saturday afternoon in St. Elizabeth's emergency room, and Adam was in a lot of pain. FUCK! Damn the military machine, and we'll be back to NYC hopefully soon.

2/7/2003- Thanks to Caustic Christ and Corpus Christi for coming out to Boston, as it was a kick ass show, and the first show at the Cambridge Elks Lodge. A big thanks also to local heroes Cut the Shit and The Point, and Erin, Joe D., Jen, and all the punks who came out and supported the scene despite the snow storm. Super special thanks to Ross and Amy for all their help making the show possible, everyone for respecting the space, and all the kids in the circle pit! Boston punks RULE.

The Profits @ the Punk Rock Olympics CBGBs, NYC, December 14 Thanks to everyone who supported us, danced, got drunk with us, and all the great bands that played. Special hugs and kisses to Gabby for putting it together, the Guatemalan punks, Molotov Cocktail for rocking out as always, Hope and Martin for putting us up (again), and MDC for having the amazing endurance to play last-during the 8th hour! Lots of fun and punk rock circle pits.

The Profit$ Played the LOUD AS FUCK FESTIVAL

July 13 at CBGS

Thanks to Ralph for getting such an event together! So many good bands, with Disassociate, Caustic Christ, Kill Your Idols and Toxic Narcotic leading the pack.

We almost didn't make the show, as our trusty black van completely broke down on the way out of town. Luckily we hadn't gotten on the interstate yet, and were still on Mass Ave. when things went WRONG. The van sounded like the bottom was falling out, and something really BAD was going on in the front end. The noise of metal grinding on metal and odd crunching sounds became louder and louder as we tried to make it back to the practice space. The van made it to Allston, then just died. We flagged down a Fries tow-truck (tow trucks are always cruising Boston like a pack of wolves. Who would have thought the bastards would be helpful?) and had the van towed down the street to our practice space.

Toxic Narcotic hadn't left yet for the show, so we luckily got a ride with them. We were all trying to look on the bright side, that we weren't stuck somewhere in CT. At least we broke down close to home. We arrived late however, and the show had already started. Since we missed our time slot, Ralph squeezed us in between bands, so we got to play for about 15 minutes. But it was the Loud As Fuck Fest, and I would have been happy to play for even 5 minutes, it still rocked.

I felt all wound up from the stress of the day, and rushing to get on stage, so I was extra adrenaline filled and pissed off. The downside was that my thoughts were scattered, and I felt too rushed to say much about our songs. Well, another time to rant I suppose. Hopefully people who have seen us know what we are about by now. The sound at CBGBs is AMAZING. I joked that even a toaster could sound like utter doom on the CB stage. I felt like my guitar could destroy worlds. It was beautiful. We rocked together as a band and everything felt right.

I missed the first two bands as we were late, and running around getting our gear loaded in. Kill Your idols was inspiring and fast, and they connected with the crowd in a really positive way that set the pit into overdrive. Disassociate was utterly brutal, and Toxic played both old hits and new songs. Caustic Christ capped the evening off, making it a damn good show and a damn good time, broken van and all.

NYC friends, drop us an email and stay in touch!

06.27.2002 1:40 AM Listening to the Varukers while it's hot as hell in Boston...

We just got back from tour a couple of days ago, and I'm still dreaming of circle pits, palm trees, desert vistas, long road hauls and so many kick ass shows. THANKS to everyone who came out to see us, put us up, bought us beers, set up shows and made us feel welcome so fucking far from home. It was an amazing journey that only reinvigorated my faith in punk rock 2002. A special THANKS to all the kids in Portland and all over California. You guys and gals rock my world. Also a big thanks to Toxic Narcotic for helping us tour the west coast for the first time. Awesome.

I'm sad tour is over, and I'm not excited about returning to the everyday grind. I already miss the feeling of the windows down on the highway, and being energized almost every night by meeting cool people, playing kick ass shows, and seeing places I've never been.

Also, new tour friends, drop me a line!

Cheers and Solidarity,

Erika Ransom

Punks Rock for Festival del Pueblo

02.25.2001 1:33 AM
Thanks to everyone who came out and had fun with us this month!
Especially a big shout out to all the crazy kids at the Tufts Art Haus in Somerville (where this photo is from). So much fun! Lots of bands came out to play: And I Can't Wait..., Leon Czolgosz, Fallen Short, Machnochiva, The Nickle Men, Dance Emma Dance and even Disaster Strikes for a couple of songs. Both the bands and the audience had so much positive energy, it was really uplifting and fucking wild. I wish all shows could be this much fun. The livingroom was packed with dancing kids for all the bands, and for AICH.. there was a pit that circled through the four rooms of the first floor. Machnochiva tore up an American flag and the nationalists were scared off. Leon Czolgosz was excellant as usual, and I never get tired of playing shows with them! We are going on adventures with them in March, watch out East Coast! For our set, I was able to set up The Profits slide show on a window blind behind us which was cool. Thanks to guy who held my mic stand up the whole time, and the Haus and Mark for putting on this kick ass DIY show for a good cause. Go back to the front page for more info on the Festival del Pueblo (May 1-5 in Boston) which the show was a benefit for. Also, word to the wise, check out And I Can't Wait..., one of my new favorite Boston hardcore bands. The singer rocked out with strength and confidence, reminding everyone that punk and hardcore is a woman's world, too. Rock on!

In other news, a few days later we played a going away party for our friend Don at Beckett's Pub in Allston. The punks really took over this usually college preppy bar! Ha! Taking back our town! It was a drunken affair with lots of bands and friends involved. Goodbye Don, we'll miss ya. Thanks to Dave for putting on the shows, and BooBoo for being a crazy punk in the pit.

Well, that's plenty for now. Watch this page for more rambles and observations. One last thing before I go-

a Reminder: Don't be fooled by media or patriotism into thinking that war is a good idea. War is created by leaders at the expense of humanity.

Diatribe #2, (summer 2000) is full of lyrics, rants and Profits whatnot, and still available at shows or by mail. Includes articles about Biodevastation 2000 in Boston and the Violent Fringe Against Biotechnology, the US War Against Women, and Television. Unfortunately, the articles are not available electronically at this time. It is now in its third printing of 80, with beautiful yellow centerfold, and is amazingly, still free.

Diatribe #1 (winter 1999) is out of print. A few are rambling around my house, and the rest are collector's items or in landfills by now. A brief 'zine with the Profit's first fit of print, "We are the Profits, a punk band in Boston that plays loud music and drinks beer while the whole world is going to hell..."
