These are the archives of my column in MRR.

First, a few words about what I'm after. Why I bother staying up late in the night, banging my head against the keyboard.

I wonder what the hell is going on here. I try to expose the ways this white supremacist, patriarchal, capitalist system weaves itself into our lives and poisons our communities, our minds and our earth. Often, I despair. But, I am constantly inspired by the energy of people who resist domination and fight for justice and equality. That is our hope and future! We must claim our lives and dreams!

Through it all, my head is filled with crashing power chords, the energy of a good Boston show the night before, late nights with old friends trying to figure out this fucked up place we live in, riding the road with my band The Profits, my favorite mix tapes, and the sound of my own screams.

In solidarity and blazing guitars, Erika Ransom 12/19/2004

Column Archives

2005

September - Behind Enemy Lines European Tour "There is a dull roar in my head, loud as a jet engine. I am traveling over the Atlantic, thousands of feet up into the atmosphere, following the curve of the Earth, headed west.At 300 miles an hour I am strapped in, the nylon belt of seat 36E holding me down, as the days of the past month traveling in Europe burn and blur together in my mind."

July - Bloodstains House "If you think jumping down THE CHUTE sounds dangerous, well, you are probably right. Luckily, defying logic, nobody yet has broken something. But, who says punk is safe anyway? All winter, cabin-fever-induced Boston punks jumped down THE CHUTE between bands during the shows, and crash-landed into a pile of foam and cardboard to cheers and beers. Punk fucking rock! This particular show-of-the-five-flyers was special not only because it was a benefit for ABC, but also because it was to be the last show at this space. The Boston DIY punk scene depends on basements to thrive, and this was the inevitable goodbye to yet another house."

June - Racing Clouds and Solidarity "A few days after the festival, we received alarming news from Elizabeth and MSN. David, who was currently in prison, was suddenly moved to an undisclosed location by Mexican authorities, unreachable by his family. Elizabeth’s family and supporters believed the move was in direct retaliation for her trip to Boston. David has since been returned to his original prison, but he awaits sentencing and his situation remains grave. As a collective, we saw no alternative but to publicly protest the femicides and stand in solidarity with Elizabeth and her brother David. The Mexican Consulate, as a representative of the Mexican government, seemed the best local target.."

May - European Tour (Part 4) " It's 4 AM and snowing. Another blizzard hit Boston, and the snow is flying diagonally in waves. I put on my black padded trench coat and stepped outside into the thick of it, alone in the quiet street outside my apartment. I walked, smoking another damn cigarette, thinking of living in the moment. Enjoying this moment, the crunch of snow under my feet, leaving the only footprints. Everything was quiet, and I could hear the sound of the snow landing, a million crystals falling from the sky."

April - Short Note "This month, I'm in the midst of organizing La Rivolta!, a two-day anarcha-feminist festival in Boston, celebrating International Women's Day. At this writing, there is exactly a month until the event, March 5-6. Holy Emma Goldman! Damn! Over the last month, La Rivolta has quickly become the largest single event I've ever helped put together, and also the most exciting."

March - European Tour (Part 3) "The night was inky black and chilly. The stars were out. I was sitting on a wooden bench, outside the Zorro squat in Leipzig, Germany. Getting some air into my lungs, getting a moment to myself, clearing my head. Trying to catch myself in time and space, feeling a little bit on the edge of the world. The day had cracked in Berlin, looking up at an anti-fascist banner on the wall."

February - European Tour (Part 2) "There is a cement face of a woman looking up, her head as large as a Volkswagen bus, broken off at the neck, at one end of the building. Her gaze takes in the many window apartments of the squat, seeing the rich tapestry of years Kopi has been built, organized and defended by many hands over the last decade. In her ears you can hear the sound of broken glass, when bank windows were smashed as a warning-Kopi would not be sold to the highest bidder!"

January - European Tour (Part 1) "This was our first European tour, so we didn't know what to expect in the way of borders. We didn't know what to expect at all..."

2004

December - Rape "Many punks know by now that three women were raped in Philly during the Pointless Fest. Many punks also know that a group of women came together immediately afterwards, and confronted the rapist bastard on the street with the strength of the truth, their rage, and their fists."

November - Sharks on Election Day "This election is coming on like a car crash. Here I am, typing from my third story apartment in Boston, sitting near the window. The sounds of traffic waft up from the busy street below. From a distance there is the sound of a loud engine going way too fast, building speed down the straightaway..."

October - Salad Days "Ah, these are the days, dear reader, that make my heart sing! July passed in a whirlwind of amazing punk shows, nights hanging out with friends and days of protests in the streets of Boston."

September - Ten Speed "Black and red and gold ribbons on my bike handlebars stream backwards in the wind as I downshift into low gear, cruising fast and furious down an asphalt river cutting through the city. I travel at the speed of my legs and arms, spinning wheels against the stone, feeling free..."

August - Harriet Tubman Has a Gun "War, poverty, genocide and greed are the bones of America. This has been going on for a very, very long time. Since 1492, to be exact. Often, I despair. How can we change any of this? I mean, really?"

July - The Missing Column. MRR forgot to print it. And it disappeared from my computer. Oh well, you'll have to imagine! Read "The Autobiography of Malcom X."

June -(written 4/5/2004) April Fool's! You're Dead. "Some witnesses said the Americans were still alive when one boy ran up with a jug of gasoline. Soon, both vehicles were fireballs...April Fool's America, there's a war going on!"

May - I'm Thirty, Fuck You! "At thirty, I find myself still angry at the world-but more than ever, with every passing year, I own the power of my rage."

April - Just Super! "The NFL Super Bowl was sponsored this year by two erectile dysfunction drugs, Levitra and Cialis...Meanwhile, Janet was attacked by the US press for almost revealing a bit of breast."

March - The Worm. "The next day, mom sent dad to work, acting the dutiful wife, sorry about their argument the night before. Once he was gone, out of the driveway, she started to run...I have no easy answers, other than the absolute necessity of the liberation of women everywhere."

February - Fascist attack! Fuck that! "On November 20 a group of skinheads attacked a Boston area punk house sending one punk to the hospital with a fractured skull. Currently anarchists, anti-fascists, punks and skins are on the alert, and are keeping an eye out for the gang's possible return."

January - Song of Baghdad. "This week, the US Senate approved a payment of $87 billion dollars ($87,000,000,000.00) from the US Treasury to pay for the War in Iraq and Afghanistan. More than the money, what's the cost of misery, what's the cost of war?"

2003

December - The Boston French Connection. "It's one in the morning and I've just come home. Tonight was an amazing show that made me fall in love with Boston punks all over again. LA FRACTION and BORN DEAD ICONS played at Amory Street house, and it was glorious!"

November - Culture Wars, Serpant Bites its Tail. "Behind the world-view that PNAC spouts in their policy papers and the "memos to opinion makers" found on their web site (www.newamericancentury.org), things are very cutthroat. You are either at the top of the pyramid enjoying your third home and a latte, or making shoes for Nike."

October - WITCH, A People's Herstory and Curses for October. "Happy Halloween! For this ancient holiday, I took a look at WITCH- a radical arm of the Women's Liberation movement that cursed and hexed the corporate, sexist, greddy bastards back in 1969. Good stuff. Witches- take to the air!"

September - Road Stories "I love the sound of a cheap car radio, static sound turned up loud, warm breeze rushing through open van windows. Last month I was gone, traveling around the country with my band THE PROFITS. There are too many things to tell, too many days that ran together stretching from coast to coast and back again."

July- Propaganda. "Propaganda creates story lines that change how people view the world. It is a very powerful psychological tool-that for now-is one of the most important forces keeping working class Americans in line. Edward Bernays is an important figure in any conversation on purposeful deceit."

June - DIY Television. "As the corporate controlled 'news' presents no dissent to the war in the Iraq, now is the time to create our own media. America might be addicted to empty television, but cable access rocks. Fuck this US war of aggression, and the media machine it rode in on."

May - Blood and Crocuses "As I write this, all is dark and cold outside as winter reaches its fitful, blustery end. Everything is heading for war, death, destruction, suicide, while millions of people on the streets of the world have called for peace, trying to hold back an army."

  • April - Patriarchy Tried to Steal My Guitar - "Gender roles, girls and boys, punk rock, shows, playing guitar, screaming, bands, sexism, all these things stewed in my mind and began to coalesce into something dark and familiar. I thought again of an experience not quite yet forgotten; not quite buried-growing up girl, becoming assimilated as "female," and all the baggage and scars that come along for the ride."

  • March - Pink and Blue "If a critic doesn't like the way the vocals sound, he or she should just say so. But boiling it down to gender is just insulting. It insults the reader who deserves a better description, and insults women by unfairly judging them as a group. Saying such things is just lazy writing, and much worse than that, it perpetuates fucked up stereotypes."
